Call for C++ Developers

Posted in Uncategorized by robbinsc on the January 13th, 2006

To anyone who’s interested -

I’m planning a big development job in the coming days. I’d like to add some features to MythTV, and I’m going to need some help. I’m busy but willing to work hard to get the project out before the next release or two. I’ll need two or three decent C++ developers (experience isn’t a factor - it’s been awhile since I’ve worked with C++ too), and I can’t guarantee any sort of payment but you’ll be recognized along with me for our contributions to the program. MythTV programming experience might be helpful, but we have the code and I think the implementation will be relatively easy.

Q: What are we doing?
A: Work on a current MythTV module. Not an overhaul - more like adding features to the existing modules

Q: Do we have a timeline?
A: I estimate with work on the side it’ll take a 3-6 month committment

Q: What do I get out of the deal?
A: Pride? Prestige? Beer (if you ever come to Tucson) :)
Q: What should I know?
A: C++ - we can sort out the code when we get started. I’ve got a plan laid out on how to accomplish it all. Some experience may be helpful.

Thanks for dropping by my website and checking out my guide

Day 001 - Spring 2006

I finally configured WordPress to work on my own personal website - which you may have stumbled upon while either

A) Looking for the SUSE/MythTV guide (which you can find here) or
B) Was directed here by me to show off my blog/website or
C) Just ended up here by mistake.

In any case, I’ve got everything configured and the SUSE guide has been updated for openSUSE 10.0 . I’ve also done a major overhaul of the naming scheme for pages. The style now is - mydomain/mythtv/mythtvx-arch.html - Where x is the SUSE version and arch is the architechure. For example, the most recent is named - mythtv10-x86-64.html. If you get real mixed up, just head to the link above and you can navigate from the MythTV mainpage I’ve setup. I’ll use this blog mostly for comments about tech and other rants and raves I think of. I’ll try to post as regularly as possible to keep you the user updated…..

But enough with the information - on to today’s post. So it’s the first day of school at the University of Arizona. As I sat in Yuma and back here in Tucson, I began to yearn for the rush of the semester - I wanted to have a stack of homework assignments and wanted to do a lot of studying. I’d like to get this CompSci degree of mine, and I’d like to be done on time. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the vacation thoroughly. However, I was tired of sitting around and feeling like I wasn’t accomplishing anything. So today was something I relished.

However, today was not quite what I wanted it to be. I wanted lectures and I wanted to start learning things. Instead, I got a bunch of syllabuses read to me. And if I ever get one of my professors to read this blog, heed this warning - Don’t waste the first day reading a syllabus. It’s a waste of my time and your time, so you may as well just hand me a syllabus and get started on the lesson. I can read it in my spare time, and you can teach me something - we all get something out of the deal. I understand the idea that people end up not reading the syllabus and create havoc when they screw up and realize they can’t change matters, but I think that’s the price people pay for entering a class. As Dr. McCann put it - the syllabus is akin to a mini-contract between the student and the teacher (granted, legally non-binding). But if you enter into any sort of agreement with someone and you don’t read through it, you’re stupider than you look. I doubt anyone will read this mini-rant, so I guess I’ll live to see more syllabi-reading for the rest of my academic career. (And I’ve got at least one more degree to get, so I guess I’ll be here awhile….)
